JACK LALANNE Steven Kaminsky (2020). Anything is Possible:                                                     The Jack LaLanne Story. Kaminsky is a fitness trainer, body builder, and Jack is one of his heroes. Kaminsky provides a historical context on fitness and the events and times of Jack without telling much about Jack...overall, there was more context than content for me. The three main ideas of Jack's philosophy about exercise, nutrition, and positive attitude did come through. The best chapter that provided me with insights into Jack's methods, character, and principles was Chapter 9 called "Jack in the Box" which is an account of the Jack LaLanne televisions show. Overall i wish there was more on Jack's "sayings" and philosophy of life. I did find a lead to the last book Jack wrote at age 95 called Live Young Forever and i o...

THINK TIME  Nancy Kline (1999). Time to Think:                                            Listening to Ignite the Human Mind. Kline is a Quaker and CEO of the organization Time to Think, Inc . The book is born of a health crisis she lived through in her 20's...a story of courage and love... the theme of the book is to create a "thinking environment" where people's dreams become real, where they can solve their own problems, and make their own decisions through your attentive listening and incisive questions that promote more thinking for THEM. the steps in a thinking session are simple to enumerate and challenging to practice because they go against the grain of most modern industrialized attitudes, behavior, and agendas...Kline applies these steps to organizational meetings, classrooms, health care, politics, intimate relationships, and families...the ...

OUTRAGEOUS OPENNESS Tosha Silver (2014). Outrageous Openness:                                            Letting the Divine Take the Lead Silver is a journalist and astrologer, a life long student of metaphysics and yoga. The book is organized as a series of short 2-3 page stories drawn from her personal experience that support an attitude embodied by a process that we need to invoke every day: offer up EVERYTHING to God, expect that the perfect path is already chosen and will manifest at the right time and place through circumstances that the Divine has already chosen, then let go, detach from any specific outcome (including people and organizations that we believe are connected to the solution to our issue), and look for signs, breadcrumbs on the path, and follow them in faith and trust...this process is what Silver means by being "outrageously open to the ...

ICARUS FLYING HIGH Seth Godin (2012). The Icarus Deception: How High Will You Fly? In the Greek myth, Icarus flew too high, wax feathers melting in the sun, plummeting to the water below; but, one can also fly too low, wings dampened by the condensation and fog from the water...another plummet...Godin plays off this myth to encourage us to fly higher... principles of making and sharing art with tons of quotes and stories, very inspiring... you get to choose what kind of art you want to make in life, and who you want to share that art with (a specific tribe/audience that will benefit from the art, not a mass general audience)... a commitment to making art that matters to your and your tribe is what matters...this commitment to continue making and shipping art is separate from the outcome (the reaction of the audience) which is beyond your control...you can use the feedback from trusted others to make better art, but this is separate from the commitment to keep making art... make a ruck...

MIRRORING Marco Iacoboni (2008). Mirroring people:                                                  The new science of how we                                                  connect with others. Iacoboni is a neuroscientist at UCLA that conducts experiments in brain mapping, especially as they relate to mirror neurons. He narrates stories that pose a problem, introduce a hypothesis, test the hypothesis in one or more experiments, and present findings at the end of the each chapter...long on the story, short on the findings, and even shorter on practical implications for living. Much of the emphasis on protocols of research is technical and more than what i wanted to read, but for others that...

PRAYER Matthew Kelly (2020). I Heard God Laugh:                                                A Practical Guide to Life's                                              Essential Daily Habit. Kelly tells of a man named John who taught him how to pray...just the two of them in a church...John read some scripture, they sat silently and conversed with God about it, then another scripture...from this Kelly developed his own method of prayer: gratitude, review of last 24 hours, significant moments, penance, freedom, intercession for others, and finishing with the Our Father...this looks a lot like what i've read in other places called ACTS--adore, confess, thanksgiving, and supplication. Kelly also says contemplative praye...
