Austin Kleon (2014). Show Your Work!

                                   10 Ways to Share

                                  Your Creativity and Get Discovered.

Kleon has a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies and describes himself as a "writer who draws." This is the second of 3 books that he has written to date (2024) related to art, drawing, and creative work.

Some of my takeaways from the book:

  • figure out what you really LOVE, find others who love the same thing online or in person...what are they sharing and not sharing, how can you share what you love with them?
  • allow others to see the PROCESS behind your work by sharing bits of it (he calls this the "daily dispatch"--even if you don't share it, create a daily dispatch of one thing you learned that day for yourself) and telling the story of how the work came to be...people want to know about the creator of the work...your story
  • invite your online friends that share what you love to an ILR (in real life) social event--keep it simple, e.g., coffee at Starbucks or some neighborhood coffee or tea house

    • create your own domain name, get it hosted, share the content you love--art, blog, podcast, music, videos, products, services, books, heroes and heroines...

The practices are built into the advice above--pick one to start with and implement part of it TODAY, and the remainder of it the rest of this week.
