200 COMMUNICATION COMMANDMENTS
Doug Campbell (2021). The 200 Communication Commandments:
Practical Tips for
Personal and Professional Situations.
Campbell is a former high school teacher. Much of what he writes is based on advice from his college years where he overcame his fear of communicating.
Overall, there are many helpful tips, AND these tips include much more than just communication which makes the title somewhat misleading (e.g., tips for getting enough sleep, learning from old people, and following through with promises are not communication commandments). Also, at least half of the tips start with the word "Don't"...this is not as helpful as telling me what to do instead of telling me what not to do. With a little creativity and thought, one can translate the "don't" commandments into positive tips.
Some of the tips:
Make eye contact
Have good posture
Smile when you greet
Tell stories
For me as a professor of communication, the tips are common sense, none of the tips are "new" for me, and yet it's useful to be reminded of the basics and reflect on how we are doing, and where we might improve, to always be "on the grow."
