Raymond Arroyo (2007)(ed.).


Arroyo wrote a previous book about Mother Angelica and then did more research to put the present more comprehensive book together that better represents her life lessons and spiritual practices.

Mother Angelica (Rita Rizzo given Italian name) was a Catholic religious sister and founded EWTN Eternal Word Television Network at age 58 in 1981...prior to that, she founded a print shop in 1972 to creat "mini books" on spirituality...before that she created a homemade studio in a monastery garage!

Some of Mother's wisdom:

  • the present moment is like a blank sheet of paper that we write on--we can draw, scribble, make poems, make a mess...the choice is ours
  • do it and drop it...don't hang on to success or failure
  • gift of understanding is to see the spiritual meaning of everything*
  • be like a broom, let G push you around wherever you are needed
  • if you feel G wants you to do something, take the first step, and then the grace will come to take more steps or G will not grant the means, meaning it's not time, or you are not meant to do it
  • success is not ours...ours is only saying yes, and the effort to step out in faith...the rest is in G's hands
  • give your guardian angel a name, become friends, ask for help
  • on writing: write whatever thoughts come until you feel emptied (this is a sign the Spirit has stopped sending ideas and it's time to stop writing)
  • G usually gives you what you need when you need it and not before!


take any one of the above ideas and try to apply it to your life...*my favorite one is to see the spiritual meaning in all of life's events, circumstances, people, projects...

TURN ON Timothy Leary (1965, 1999). Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out Leary was a University Professor at Harvard who is best know for his experiments with LSD. The book is part lectures, part interviews, and part essays. Given all the media hype about Leary, i was surprised at how much common sense i encountered, and how much he speaks to learning, hope, and love.  He begins with a chapter on how to start your own religion (to invoke the rights of the first amendment in US law) with family and friends, a tribe of people living together in community with their own laws...a place where sacrament is consumed (it need not be LSD, but anything that is spiritually meaningful to the community, something that binds the community together in ceremony)...a place preferably in nature where one feels protected and nurtured.  The BIG ADVICE is to drop out of society's robot world/mind, and turn on to God/Goddess (the Spirit), nature, and the body and mind, and tune in (dropping back into socie...
