INDUCTION

Max Highstein (2019). Guided Meditation Handbook.

Highstein has a BA in Music, and two MA's in Counseling Psychology and Spiritual Psychology. This book covers how to create audio-guided meditations and includes 12 scripts for various topics including: relaxation, pain management, sleep, processing grief, decision making, meditation.

The process of creating a guided meditation includes:

Induction

help the listener shift attention from normal waking consciousness to a relaxed and receptive state of consciousness through slow deep breathing combined with words like comfortable, relaxed, slow, deep, rest, secure, settle...

Transition

a further shift accomplished through a metaphor like: ascending or decending a stairway or hill/mountain, elevator...(depending on if you want to increase or decrease the energy), walking through a doorway, stepping onto a train, boat, plane, or getting on a horse, elephant, unicorn...

Main body of the program

topics might vary from health, growth, creativity, spirituality...use visualization, engage all of the senses, employ affirmations

Outro/Ending

bring the listener back to full waking consciousness, e.g., soon it will be time to bring your journey to a close, gently bring your awareness back to your body, and when you're ready, open your eyes, and feel awake, alert, and refreshed

Throughout the process, speak slowly in a soft voice, making sure that the sequence feels like a good story...like a child's bedtime story

Practice: choose a meditation topic that you would like to create...pick something related to health, growth, creativity, spirituality, or some need that you are currently experiencing, and follow the steps above to create your own recorded meditation...listen to it and see what you might like to tweak before you share it with others
