JUMP TIME
Jean Houston (2004). Jump Time:
Shaping Your Future
in a World of Radical Change.
Houston has doctorates in both psychology and religion, and is an international author, consultant, and speaker. In this book, she defines "jump time" as an evolutionary shift from the old to the new, a time of potential radical transformation/evolution on every system level. Her use of metaphor and vocabulary makes engaging reading, and her references to other researchers and people of indigenous wisdom fills the pages. Another book is needed that takes her ideas and turns them into specific, concrete practices. To her credit, she does include some of these often in the form of guided meditations, but i wish there were more!
some ideas (and practices) that resonated with me:
Greek entelechy (n-tell-ah-key) or higher self that love you, empowers you, calls forth the best in you to be not afraid...you have enough power and creativity, you are the one we've been waiting for to help the world! If you google her name and entelechy, you'll find a meditation by her on how to connect with and cultivate your entelechy.
time stretching--take one minute of chronos time (set a timer) and imagine all the projects you want to complete as fast as you can...with images in the imagination, we can accomplish much more in one minute than we could in hours/days of chronos time...this can also be used to practice a new skill or brainstorm, or write a paper or...
polyphenia--the idea that we have within us many selves (think mythic archetypes) that we can call upon to help us with whatever situation we face...read/view/meditate on these many selves/archetypes that make up the breadth of who you are (suggest beginning with myths of whatever culture you resonate with)
path to peace is developed in a chapter on the story of Deganawidah--some ideas: stop feeding the raiders, read about the practice of peace beads to bring two opposing sides together, transformation of enemy to friend by empowering them to do good, and planting and cultivating the white pine tree representing the peace tree that the world so desperately needs.
