FAITH

Harold and Charmin Koenig (2023). Nothing More Important:

                                                           A Book About Faith.

Harold is a medical doctor at Duke and the author of hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and books on religion-spirituality and health (especially mental health like depression), and Charmin is a nurse who worked in urgent care for many years. They are married and have two adult children.

Summary: "Nothing is more important than faith--belief in, trust in, having hope in, and loving God" (p.155) [i would add also loving: self, others, and nature as in the SONG of Life]

The primary sources used to support this claim, in order of frequency of use, are:

  • Bible
  • Oswald Chamber's (1935) My Utmost for His Highest (1935)
  • Brother Lawrence's (1692) The Practice of the Presence of God, and
  • C. S. Lewis' (1952) Mere Christianity

While the Koenigs acknowledge other faiths, they do not attempt to extrapolate beyond their personal faith experiences within the Christian context. The fragility of faith and the need to protect and nurture faith within a loving and supportive community is also highlighted.

We all have faith in SOMETHING...what do you put your trust and hope in...how can you protect, nurture, and grow in your faith. Find one activity you can do each day, something small that you can do in less than 5 minutes, to nurture your faith. Engage in this activity for one week. At the end of the week, reflect on what you learned about your faith.
